Spelthorne MP presides over schools' parliamentary debate
Spelthorne MP Kwasi Kwarteng took the Speaker's chair once again for a lively Commons-style debate in the Council Chamber during UK Parliament week.
Organised by Spelthorne Council and supported by the Parliament Education Service, Spelthorne senior schools were invited to the council offices to learn about parliament and take part in a commons-style debate.
Teams comprising year 10 and 11 students from Thomas Knyvett, Sunbury Manor and St James Senior boys' schools spent the afternoon learning the finer points of the parliamentary process. Students were asked to debate whether CCTV should be installed in every street.
The no vote won by 10 to 8.
Prizes of book vouchers were awarded to three students chosen by Kwasi based on their outstanding performance during the debate. They were also offered a tour of the Houses of Parliament. All of the students received certificates and goodie bags.
The students also heard from Diane Hedditch from parliament educational outreach, the Mayor of Spelthorne Cllr Vivienne Leighton, who gave an insight into her role and experiences, and were given a presentation on the use of CCTV in public spaces.
Cllr Maureen Attewell, Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing, said: "We hope that the opportunity to engage with their MP and local councillors under the guidance of the Parliament Education team has been a rewarding experience for these impressive young people.
"Congratulations to the three winners and all who took part in this worthwhile event."
