Staines fire station to remain open until new £3.7m Ashford base is complete, county council announces

Staines fire station will remain open until the new Ashford base is completed in recognition of the "clear views" of residents on the closure.

Surrey County Council has abandoned plans to close the Town Lane station in April ahead of the expected mid-2018 opening of the new £3.7 million Fordbridge Road site.

On Wednesday (February 1) county council leader David Hodge said: “As leader, I’ve taken the decision to honour our original commitment made by cabinet to keep Staines fire station open while the new station at Fordbridge is being built after listening to the clear views of the people of Staines and the local MP [ Kwasi Kwarteng ].

“We’re facing huge financial pressures and none of us want to make cuts – we’re doing the best we can to deliver excellent services for residents despite the severe strain our budgets are under.”

Kwasi Kwarteng, the MP for Spelthorne, praised the role of Cllr Hodge in the move: “Many of us have worked quietly behind the scenes to resolve this situation," he said.

“Thankfully, Spelthorne Conservatives have an excellent relationship with David Hodge, who has been a tremendously positive influence.”
