There are so many great events in the Borough in July and August. I attended the Staines-upon-Thames day a couple of weeks ago, which was a terrific event attended by hundreds of people. We enjoyed brilliant sunshine. There are plenty of other things coming up soon too, including the Chertsey and Sunbury regattas.
But while I really look forward to enjoying these events, contrary to popular belief, MPs can have a lot of paper work to catch up with over the summer. Different local issues also continue to crop up week on week that need addressing. One particular local issue that I am conscious is still unresolved, is the proposed eco park development in Charlton Lane.
As residents will know, I sympathise with the deep concerns people have about the development. I led an adjournment debate in Parliament to highlight local opposition to it at the highest level.
In 2012, Surrey County Council granted the development planning permission. However, earlier this year, SITA applied for a section 73 amendment to its original planning application, to allow for the construction of a new design of gassifier or incinerator – using a different processing technology – in place of what was originally approved. Surrey County Council made the decision that it was “minded to approve” the development again. This decision has been referred to the Secretary of State for approval.
The Secretary of State is still looking at things and is yet to make a decision. I wanted to let residents know that I have formally written to him to request that he urges restraint in granting approval. I feel that it is my duty as a local representative to voice concerns about the encroachment onto the Green Belt, the unproven technology and potential impact on the local community of the proposed development.
I really hope that this issue can be resolved sooner than later.
